Position Summary
The Facilities & Fleet Intern will work a total of 60 hours and gain hands-on experience supporting the County’s facilities, vehicles, equipment, and related operations. Working closely with the Facilities and Fleet team, the intern will have the opportunity to learn how local government manages and maintains the resources that support County employees and services to the community. This internship offers a high degree of flexibility and can be shaped collaboratively by the intern and supervisor based on the intern’s interests, skills, and the County’s current priorities and initiatives.
General Duties and Responsibilities

Essential Functions
- Assist with facilities maintenance, operations, and improvement projects.
- Support inventory and organization of County facilities, equipment, tools, and supplies.
- Assist with fleet management, including vehicle records, maintenance schedules, inspections, and usage tracking.
- Help research and evaluate vehicle, equipment, or facility needs and potential replacement options.
- Assist with preventative maintenance tracking and scheduling.
- Support facility inspections and help identify maintenance, safety, or operational needs.
- Assist with organizing facility and fleet documentation, records, and procedures.
- Help develop or improve tracking systems, spreadsheets, checklists, and standard operating procedures.
- Assist with space planning, facility utilization, or workspace improvement projects.
- Research best practices, vendors, products, or services related to facilities and fleet operations.
- Participate in meetings and gain exposure to how County facilities, vehicles, and equipment are planned, maintained, and managed.

Requirements
Compensation will be determined by the applicant’s full skillset with consideration of the following:
- Current enrollment in high school
- Preferred areas of study may include facilities management, construction management, engineering, business, operations management, automotive or diesel technology, environmental studies, sustainability, accounting, or a related field; however, students from all areas of study are encouraged to apply.
- Experience with school, community, volunteer, employment, or extracurricular activities demonstrating responsibility, teamwork, communication, or organization.
- Interest in local government, public service, or community affairs.
- Strong written and verbal communication skills.
- Ability to conduct basic research and summarize information clearly.
- Ability to maintain confidentiality and exercise appropriate judgment when handling information.
- Ability to work independently while also seeking guidance when needed.
- Ability to interact professionally with county employees, elected officials, community members, or others.
- Basic proficiency with Microsoft Office or Google Workspace applications.
- Willingness to learn new systems, processes, and technology.
- Ability to approach unfamiliar issues with curiosity, professionalism, and an open mind.
Potential hazards are generally limited to ordinary workplace conditions and occasional travel to offsite meetings or community events. Depending on assigned projects, the intern may occasionally work in outdoor environments or visit county facilities where conditions may vary.

Notice of Emergency/Disaster Responsibilities
All Lake County Employees may be required to work as a Disaster Service Worker when a local declaration of emergency or disaster is declared by the Board of County Commissioners. To be prepared for this role, all employees and emergency service function (ESF) leads will attend emergency management trainings and exercises as requested by the Director of Emergency Management. With advanced notification from OEM, employees will make reasonable efforts to attend training events in coordination with other employees and supervisors.
